General Information Regarding the Undergraduate Program


Our Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil) degree program offers a unique combination of characteristics:

  • Admissions are based upon the demonstrated commitment and intellectual capacity of the entering student. Students in need of academic preparation/remediation may be provided with foundation programs before tackling the core curriculum.
  • Freshman year incorporates study/time management techniques and public speaking preparation as well as important skills for social success.
  • Although the program is not residential, students participate in regularly scheduled formal dining together with other social and cultural experiences.
  • Students enjoy lively Socratic engagement, with small classes.
  • Much of the curriculum is common for all students and provide a rigorous academic foundation, meeting each student at their individual level of preparation and bringing each to the level of academic competence required for success.
  • Students maintain a designated tutor throughout their freshman and sophomore years and can retain that relationship in junior and senior years or choose a tutor based on their degree concentrations(s).
  • Students can take as many courses within the academic year as they (and the Provost) determine to be appropriate for them. With the option of summer courses, students can progress through the program at either a faster or a more measured pace.
  • Students have the option of pursuing one or more concentrations including:
    • Business and Entrepreneurship
    • Classical Education
    • Philosophy, Politics & Economics
    • Pre-Law
    • Theology
  •  Senior students produce a research-based thesis in their primary area of concentration.
  • We compliment the classroom experience with both live and asynchronous online resources providing:
    • Long-distance teamwork with a cadre of students in the U.S. and overseas
    • A wider range of faculty and courses than can be offered on campus
    • Support and enrichment materials customized to the student’s needs
    • Lowered delivery expenses, reducing the overall cost of the degree program
  •  Students also have the possibility of completing one or more semesters at a sister-institution in another region of the United States.
  • Students completing sophomore year have an option to transfer to a sister-institution to pursue a wide range of degree options. As an example, students can transfer to Ave Maria University in Naples Florida with full-credit for their core curriculum and pursue their choice of 37 majors and 24 minors.

Overall Purpose of the Program

The B. Phil program’s purpose is to provide a classical core education for students interested in a challenging and edifying course of study. The curriculum is dedicated to a study of the liberal arts and designed to produce clear writers, critical thinkers, and sophisticated readers. Our faculty will prompt students to consider profound questions in philosophy and literature, to ponder the complexities of mathematics, science, and language, while becoming familiar with the great events in the history of Western civilization. The degree provides a rigorous liberal arts program designed for students to acquire basic knowledge in many disciplines, with a special emphasis on the Catholic intellectual tradition.

BPhil in Philosophy and Theology Requirements

(1) The program involves the acquisition of 120 credit hours. Transfer students must earn at least 60 credit hours at Holy Spirit College.

(2) Length of study at Holy Spirit College may not exceed seven years.(3) The overall core curriculum is comprised of 60 credit hours.

(4) Theology and philosophy courses (excluding the senior thesis) must comprise at least 36 credit hours.

(5) All students choose a concentration comprised of 18 credit hours in one of three areas: Catholic Classical Education; Business and Entrepreneurship; or Philosophy, Politics, and Economics

(6) Elective courses are comprised of 6 credit hours, which may be comprised of a senior thesis research project.

(7) A minimum grade of (C-) is required in all upper level courses.

The Undergraduate Core Curriculum

The core curriculum offers students the opportunity to take specific courses in the great traditions of the liberal arts. In these carefully selected courses, students share together in the discovery of truth and acquire the indispensable foundation for a lifelong learning. The courses provide a breadth and depth of knowledge and allow for theology and natural science to be integrated within the liberal arts.



Each student will choose one of five concentrations as part of their upper division coursework, including four required courses as well as six hours of experiential learning: Business and Entrepreneurship, Catholic Classical Education, Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, Pre-Law, or Theology.  Every student will have a “field” placement and project to complete the fall and spring semesters of their senior year.  The program plan sheets below will assist students in tracking their progress in each of the B. Phil’s concentrations.
